Upload speed and bitrate you need for live streaming

Game is running, OBS is ready, you hit "Start Streaming". The first five minutes look fine, then chat starts filling with "it's pixelating" and "you're lagging". The red light in the corner of OBS and the dropped frames counter agree with them. Usually it isn't your PC: your stream is going out through the narrowest pipe in the house — your upload speed.

What upload speed do you need to stream?

Short answer: around 6 Mbps of real upload for 720p 60fps, and 9-12 Mbps for 1080p 60fps. A low-motion chatting stream will go out fine on 3-4 Mbps.

The important part: those numbers are your upload, not your download. When you stream, data leaves your house. You can have a 1000 Mbps download line, but if upload is 5 Mbps then 5 Mbps is your ceiling. Most home connections are asymmetric — we explained why in why upload speed is slower.

Bitrate and upload speed are not the same thing

You can't pick the right settings until you separate these two:

  • Bitrate is how many bits per second OBS produces. You choose it (say 6000 kbps), and it decides picture quality: higher bitrate, cleaner image.
  • Upload speed is how many bits per second your line can actually push out. Your connection decides that, not you.

If bitrate exceeds upload, the surplus never leaves the building: frames drop, the picture blocks up, the stream cuts out. So raising the bitrate doesn't raise quality — raising it to what your line can carry does.

One detail people forget: audio takes space too. A 160 kbps audio track sits on top of your 6000 kbps video. Do the maths with the total.

The "upload needed" column is roughly 1.4 times the bitrate. The next section explains why.

The 70 percent rule: you can't use all of your upload

The most reliable rule of thumb among streamers: keep your bitrate below 70 percent of your measured upload speed.

Why leave headroom?

  • Speed isn't constant. A line that measures 10 Mbps can sag to 8 during the evening. The buffer is what keeps your stream alive when it does.
  • You're not alone on the line. Cloud backups, updates and someone else's video call share the same upload pipe.
  • There's overhead. Audio, protocol headers and retransmitted packets all consume bandwidth.

Example: if you measure 10 Mbps upload, your safe ceiling is about 7000 kbps total — 6000 kbps video plus 160 kbps audio fits comfortably. If you measure 5 Mbps, dropping to 720p60 gives a sharper, more stable stream than forcing 1080p60.

Platform limits differ

  • Twitch: in practice the cap is around 6000 kbps for Affiliates and Partners. Even with 50 Mbps of upload you can't send more, so 6000 kbps is already the target for 1080p60.
  • YouTube: more generous, recommending roughly 9000-12000 kbps for 1080p 60fps. If you have the upload for it, the picture is visibly cleaner.
  • Kick, Discord, TikTok: limits vary and change often; check the platform's own settings page before you go live.

There's also transcoding to consider. YouTube automatically offers your stream at lower qualities; on Twitch that isn't guaranteed for every streamer. Send a very high bitrate and viewers on weak connections may not be able to watch you at all — for small channels 4500 kbps is often a safer choice than 6000.

Stuttering and dropped frames aren't always about upload

If your numbers look fine but the stream still breaks up, work down this list:

  1. Wi-Fi. The single biggest risk for streaming. Occasional packet loss is normal on wireless, and even 1 percent loss shows up as stutter. Switch to an Ethernet cable — the most effective single step.
  2. Unstable latency (jitter). Enough speed but jumpy latency makes the stream wobble. If your test shows high jitter, run the diagnosis in what are ping and jitter.
  3. Other uploads at the same time. Pause cloud sync and game updates while you're live.
  4. The wrong ingest server. Pick the server nearest you in OBS; a distant one adds both latency and risk.
  5. Your PC, not your line. If OBS says "Encoding overloaded", the bottleneck is your CPU or GPU, not the internet. When the test looks good but the experience doesn't, speed test is high but the internet feels slow helps you tell the two apart.

A five-minute pre-stream check

  1. Plug in the cable — don't go live on Wi-Fi.
  2. Run the speed test and write down the upload figure. Measure at your streaming hour; a line at 9 pm isn't the line at noon.
  3. Multiply the measured upload by 0.7 — that's your safe total bitrate.
  4. Set the bitrate in OBS below that number and use CBR.
  5. Do a five-minute test stream and check that dropped frames stay near zero in the OBS stats window.

For a viewer, smooth 720p always beats blocky 1080p. Give it the bitrate your line can carry, and no more.

Summary

  1. Streaming is limited by upload, not download.

  4. Twitch is effectively capped near 6000 kbps; YouTube accepts higher bitrates.
  5. Wi-Fi is the number one cause of dropped frames — go wired, then measure at your streaming hour.
