10 ways to boost your Wi-Fi signal

Every home has that one corner where the router just won't reach: video stalls in the bedroom, the signal dies in the bathroom, four bars in the living room but one in the kitchen. The good news is that most weak signal isn't fixed with money — it's fixed by putting the router in the right place and correcting a few settings. Here are 10 ways, starting with the most effective.
1. Put the router in the centre and up high
The single biggest win is where the signal radiates from. A router broadcasts in every direction; put it in a corner, on the floor or inside a cabinet and you waste half your range on a wall. Place it as close to the centre of your home as you can — on a shelf, high off the floor and out in the open. In a multi-storey home, keep it near the floor you use most.
2. Keep it away from metal, water and electronics
Wi-Fi waves hate certain obstacles. Things that should not sit next to your router:
- Metal surfaces — steel cabinets, the fridge, the back of a mirror (they reflect the signal).
- Water — a fish tank, a boiler, even a crowd of people in one room.
- Other electronics — microwave ovens and cordless phones drown out the 2.4 GHz band.
Even moving the router a metre or two from these makes a difference.
3. Angle the antennas correctly
If your router has external antennas, don't point them all the same way. The rule of thumb: keep one antenna vertical and one horizontal. Because devices carry their antennas in different planes, crossing the router's antennas improves the odds of reaching gadgets on different floors and rooms.
4. Use the right band: 2.4 or 5 GHz?
Modern routers broadcast two networks. 2.4 GHz is slower but passes through walls better and travels farther; 5 GHz is much faster but has shorter range and gets blocked by walls. 5. Escape the crowded channel
In an apartment block, dozens of neighbouring networks share the same channels — it's like everyone shouting in one crowded room. From the router's admin page (usually 192.168.1.1) you can change the Wi-Fi channel. On 2.4 GHz, 1, 6 or 11 overlap the least; on 5 GHz there are plenty of channels, so "automatic" is usually fine. 6. Keep firmware and hardware current
Manufacturers release performance and security updates over time. Check the router's admin page for a firmware update. There's also the matter of age: a single-band router more than 5-6 years old won't meet today's demand. If the router your provider gave you is ancient, asking for a new one is the cheapest big leap you can make.
7. Take needless devices off the network
Signal that feels weak is sometimes not signal at all — it's congestion. A TV streaming 4K, a phone uploading a backup and a console pulling an update all at once leave little bandwidth for the device in the far room. 8. Consider a range extender or mesh
If placement and settings aren't enough, hardware steps in. There are two options:

To close a small dead spot, a repeater does the job; to blanket a whole large home, mesh is better. Either must be placed where the router signal still reaches — put it in a dead spot and it just copies a weak signal.
9. Powerline adapters: run the wire through the socket
In concrete homes where walls kill Wi-Fi, powerline adapters help: one plugs into a socket near the router, the other into a socket in the far room, and the internet travels over your home's electrical wiring. In the far room you get Ethernet or a new Wi-Fi point from it. It isn't as smooth as mesh, but for feeding a single distant room it's practical and affordable.
10. The most solid: go wired if you can
If a device sits still (a desktop, a TV, a console), the best Wi-Fi solution is not using Wi-Fi at all. An Ethernet cable gives the highest speed and the lowest, most stable latency, and is immune to signal interference. Measure, then decide
The only way to see whether a change worked is to measure it. Run the speed test in the problem room, make one change, run it again and watch the difference. Feel deceives; numbers don't. Measure at the same spot before and after moving the router and you'll know for certain which method actually worked in your home.
