Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz? Which one to connect to

Under your router you see two Wi-Fi network names: one plain, one ending in "5G" or "5GHz". Your phone sees both. So which should you connect to? Short answer: it depends — and once you understand the logic, you'll never be confused again.
The difference in one sentence
- 2.4 GHz → range. Reaches farther, passes through walls better, but is slower and more crowded.
- 5 GHz → speed. Much faster and cleaner, but its range is shorter and it struggles through walls.
Both come from the same router; the choice is a "distance vs speed" trade-off.

Which one, when?
- Same room as the router → 5 GHz. Best for getting full speed. Only 5 GHz (or a cable) can carry your fibre line's 200-500 Mbps; 2.4 GHz physically cannot deliver that.
- Two walls away, distant room → 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz signal arrives weak there; 2.4 is slower but more stable.
- Constantly moving around (a phone roaming the house) → if it's modern, the router merges both into one name and steers the device to the best one automatically (called band steering). Seeing separate names means it's off.
Why does the speed test differ between the two?
Measuring 300 Mbps on 5 GHz and 70 Mbps on 2.4 GHz on the same line is perfectly normal — the bottleneck is the wireless band, not the line. So always run the speed test on the same network from the same spot; measuring on different networks and concluding "my internet slowed down" is misleading. Practical tips
- Do the real speed test over a cable. Any Wi-Fi band puts a ceiling on it; to see your line's true capacity, measure over Ethernet.
- Raise and centre the router. A router on the floor, inside a cabinet or behind the TV chokes both bands, especially 5 GHz.
- If range falls short, before dropping to 2.4 consider moving the router or adding a mesh/extender — carrying 5 GHz farther beats settling for 2.4's slowness.
- For gaming and video calls prefer 5 GHz (or a cable) where possible; they want low latency. Why ping matters: ping and jitter.
