How to lower ping: step-by-step methods

You lined up the shot, pulled the trigger, and nothing happened — half a second later you were the one on the floor. Or everyone in the meeting hears your voice a beat late. In both cases the culprit isn't download speed: it's ping. The good news is that ping can usually be cut significantly at home, without paying for a faster plan.

Measure first: is your ping actually high?

Don't guess. Run the speed test and note three numbers: ping, jitter and upload. One run isn't enough — repeat it a few times through the day, both on an idle line and while someone else is streaming. The gap between those two conditions tells you which of the steps below will help you.

A rough frame: under 30 ms is excellent, 30-60 ms is comfortable, 60-100 ms is workable, and over 100 ms hurts in competitive games. Per-game thresholds are in what is a good ping for gaming.

1. Switch to a cable — the single biggest win

Wi-Fi is ping's number-one enemy. You share the airwaves with neighbouring networks, every packet waits its turn, and as the signal weakens your device retransmits data. The result isn't just higher ping — it's unstable ping.

An Ethernet cable typically saves 5-20 ms and nearly eliminates the spikes. That's the only reason competitive players wire up without exception. If running a cable is impossible, at least move closer to the router and use the 5 GHz band: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

2. Pick the right server — distance is physics

Part of your ping is non-negotiable: a signal travels through fibre at about two-thirds the speed of light. From Türkiye to a server in California you're looking at roughly 150 ms at best, and no setting changes that.

What you can do is choose a closer server. Don't leave your game's region setting on "automatic" — pick the nearest region manually. Some games show ping in the server list; choose the lowest one, not the busiest one.

3. Kill bufferbloat: why ping spikes when the line is busy

This is the sneakiest cause. A ping that sits at 20 ms when idle can climb to 200-300 ms while someone downloads a large file or a cloud backup uploads. The reason is oversized buffers in the router: instead of dropping packets, it parks them in a long queue and latency balloons. This is called bufferbloat.

Diagnosing it is easy: start a big download on one device and watch ping at the same time. If it doubles, you've found your culprit. The fix is to enable QoS or SQM in your router's interface and set the line rate slightly below your real measured speed. 4. Clear the line, silence the background

The things that inflate ping are usually invisible: automatic cloud backups, game library updates, OS downloads, a TV streaming 4K in another room. Ping suffers most when the upload channel is saturated — your small game packets end up queued behind a huge upload.

Before you play: pause the backup app, schedule downloads for later, and if possible agree on "match hours" with the household. It's the fastest result you can get for free.

5. Jitter and packet loss: ping's invisible twins

A steady 60 ms is far better than an average of 60 ms that bounces between 20 and 120. That bouncing is jitter, and you feel it as teleporting enemies in games or robotic audio on calls. Packet loss means your actions vanish entirely — even 1-2 percent ruins competitive play.

The order matters: cable, server choice, QoS/SQM and a clear line — that's where the gains come from. The rest is decoration.

7. Still high? Is it you or the line?

If you're still seeing over 100 ms on a cable, on an idle line, to a nearby server, the problem is most likely outside your home: infrastructure, your ISP's routing, or a fault on the line. At that point collect a few days of measurements (different hours, always wired) and take those records to your provider. Saying "ping reaches this value at these hours" instead of "my internet is bad" changes the entire conversation.
