Speed test is high but the internet feels slow — why?

The speed test says 300 Mbps, the light is green, everything looks fine. Yet your Instagram feed stutters, the video keeps buffering mid-clip, and in your game the enemy teleports around the corner. "The test is high but the internet feels slow" — this contradiction is extremely common, and it has a clean explanation: a speed test measures one thing, and everyday slowness is usually caused by something else entirely.

What does a speed test actually measure?

A speed test pulls one big stream of data from a nearby measurement server at the highest rate it can. In other words, it shows you the theoretical ceiling of your line under ideal conditions. That answers the question "how many Mbps can I download" — but very little of everyday use looks like that scenario. Here's the key point: a high download number does not mean "my internet will feel fast." Opening a web page depends on dozens of tiny requests going back and forth, and what decides that is not raw speed but latency.

What you call "slow" is often latency

When a page loads, your browser goes back and forth to the server dozens of times — "give me this, give me that." Each round trip takes about one ping. Even on a 300 Mbps line, if every round trip takes 150 ms, the page loads sluggishly. So even with plenty of download capacity, high latency makes the internet feel slow.

Bufferbloat: high test, but everything stutters

This is the number-one cause of the "high test / slow feel" contradiction. When your line is busy (someone is downloading a big file, a cloud backup is uploading, a console is updating), ping suddenly spikes — a latency that sits at 20 ms when idle can jump to 300 ms once the line fills up. This is called bufferbloat.

You run the speed test on an idle line and get a great result. But in real use the line is constantly busy with something, and that's exactly when everything stutters. A simple way to diagnose it: start a big download on one device and watch ping on another at the same time — if it skyrockets, bufferbloat is the culprit. The fix is to enable QoS/SQM, a feature found on most modern routers.

DNS: pages open slowly but files download fast

Now picture this pattern: your downloads are fast, but every page you click sits "in limbo" for a beat and then suddenly appears. That is almost always DNS. DNS is the directory that translates a domain name (the site address) into an IP; a slow or broken DNS delays the start of a page load — but does not change your download speed.

Wi-Fi and distance: where did you run the test?

Most people run the speed test right next to the router on a single device — then decide the internet is "slow" from their phone three rooms away. The two scenarios are not the same. Wi-Fi drops off sharply with distance, walls, and interference from neighbouring networks.

Sometimes the problem is on the other end

Not every slowdown comes from your line. The video server you're watching may be overloaded, the app may be throttling you to a set speed, or you might simply be connecting to a server on the other side of the world. The way to tell: try a different site or service. If only one app is slow, the problem is probably not your line but that service.
